Thus the 3 year wait has come to an end…
Keen and Graev's Gaming Blog — Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning is finally coming out today!  After a little over 3 years of waiting, several delays and a few overhauls, the game is finally launching and opening the gates for play.  It’s been a bumpy road at times and even I can admit that there were times when the game’s appeal was lacking.  Other games jumped into the limelight, new ideas threatened WAR’s ‘oldschool’ RvR style, an  all we had was promises to cling to for years. I remember the state of turmoil I was in for over a year as I sat waiting, wanting, and really needing a beta invite ...

Thoughts on a Sharded Existence
The Ancient Gaming Noob — Warhammer Online is live, the head start has commenced for all eligible parties now, and by Friday night the full weight of the popularity of the title will be brought to bear on Mythics server farm plan.  The Monday morning blog titles will no doubt tell the tale of how well that comes off. But I am ...

Bizarro World.
Rev. Dr. Joshua S. Drescher — Curt Schilling digs our game. If you love baseball (and I’ve loved baseball for as long as I can remember), you know that Curt is The Man.  This is a guy who occupies the most elite territory in professional sports - a dominant player with a truly storied career filled with championships and awards and on-field heroics. I’ve been a Schilling fan since his early years playing for my beloved (if long-suffering) Orioles.  He plays baseball the right way and is a blast to watch - one of the good guys you can just outright root for without reservation (well… unless he’s ...

AGDC: Interview with Brett Close, CEO of Curt Schilling's 38 Studios

Blizzard's black ops title, and why it's a long way off

38 Studios buys WoW newsletter
WoW.com — Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Blizzard, News items, Economy, Guides, Making moneyHere's a strange little story -- 38 Studios is the MMO/entertainment company owned by baseball player Curt Schilling (who is himself a very big WoW fan). They're working on a secret project codenamed Copernicus (which our sister site Massively has been covering closely), but apparently they have other interests as well -- they've picked up a company called Mentor Media, whose main product is the Azeroth Advisor, a custom newsletter ...

Azeroth Advisor Featured on The Instance and WoW Insider
The Hunter's Mark — Generally speaking, I’ll take any chance I get to plug the company I work for and run with it. Not simply because I work for them, but because I genuinely love my job, love the amazing folks I work with, love the parent company, and truly believe in the value of the service they produce for players. So, while listening to the latest episode of The Instance podcast this morning (my absolute favorite podcast that I have quickly become a majorly geeked-out fangirl of), I got pretty excited when I heard them talk to Curt Schilling about The Azeroth ...

WoW Insider interviews 38 Studios' Brett Close about Azeroth Advisor
WoW.com — Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, News items, Economy, Leveling, Guides, InterviewsLast week we reported that 38 Studios, a company working on its own MMO property, had picked up the Azeroth Advisor, a custom newsletter directed towards players of World of Warcraft. At the time, we were slightly confused -- why would another gaming company want to purchase a guide written to promote and help players of a competitor's game? To get the answer, we went straight to the top, and sat down to talk with Brett Close, CEO of 38 Studios, ...

In A League Of His Own
Wandering Goblin — We sure you've become accustomed to the flogging the Wandering Goblin often gives to 38 Studios' head cheese, Curt Schilling.  Why should this time be any different?  The guy is putting his neck out there once again, according to the Boston Herald, and we wonder what the heck he's thinking. Although he is trailing in the polls, Republican presidential candidate John McCain got a boost from 38 Studios boss Curt Schilling at a campaign appearance in New Hampshire last night.  Says Schilling, "The size of the payroll has nothing to do with the heart ...

2009 MMORPG Progdictionations
The Ancient Gaming Noob — The New Year is upon us again, a time when we frequently assess the past 12 months ended up handing us and examine what the next 12 might bring. Barca B.C.: A Diesel MMO?
ITG! I'm Talkin' Games — Vin Diesel as Richard Riddick. Image via Wikipedia Several sites are reporting on a Destructoid interview with Vin Diesel about Vin Diesel's dream project an MMO called Barca B.C. Diesel's own studio, Tigon Studios would develop the title. In the interview Vin discusses the scope of building an MMO and some vision he has for the title, and mentions that it could be years before the game materializes. I wasn't aware that Riddic had his own studio until now, and I think this might be fuel for nerd man crushes the world over. If playing XXX and Riddic aren't wasn't ...

Ten things I hope to see from 38 Studios
Epic Slant - MMO Design and Guild Leadership — Ten things I hope to see from 38 Studios March 23rd, 2009 by Ferrel It would come as no surprise to me if you’ve never heard of 38 Studios or Copernicus. The former is a game studio founded by Curt Shilling and the latter is the yet to be named MMO that they are producing. There has been a lot of speculation about the project but the development shop has been tight lipped. If you visit their website ...

Schilling Retires from Baseball
Nerfbat — Curt Schilling, the big man here at 38 Studios, has officially retired from baseball. Congratulations on an amazing career in baseball, and welcome to your full-time career as a game creator. He’s made 38 an incredible place to work even with baseball ever-present in his mind. Now that he’s dedicated fully to his family and the company, I can’t wait to see what happens!

Curt Schilling gives up strike outs, hoping for MMO home run
Massively — ... has the same kind of career as an MMO developer as he had as a pitcher, rival developers will be hard-pressed to keep up with his new company, 38 Studios. Anyone else feeling uneasy about Copernicus?
Keen and Graev's Gaming Blog — ... 38 Studios‘ Copernicus IP has me feeling a bit uneasy.  Reading the interviews and statements from Brett Close, I’m not sure what to expect from the studio anymore.  Originally I was expecting a company from Curt Schilling, with talent like Ryan Shwayder, and Steve Danuser (to only name a few) to put out a product that would feel familiar.  Honestly and simply, I was expecting a better EverQuest.  However, it appears that 38 Studios is taking their MMOG(if we can call it that any longer?) in a different direction. ...

38 Studios estimates it will take 50 to 100 million to finish Copernicus, Schilling looking for investors
Massively — Kurt Schilling is out on the field again -- the investing field, that is. The former baseball star turned game developer is looking for more investors to back 38 Studios and their first game, the title codenamed Copernicus. The company's estimates for their game ...

Update: 38 Studios sets facts straight on Copernicus
Massively — In a follow-up to our story posted yesterday, 38 Studios has contacted us with a response on the issue of the game's cost to be between 50 million and 100 million and their "tenative release date" as reported by the Boston Globe. According to 38 Studios, the 50 to 100 million figure came from the Boston Globe and not 38 Studios, as finances were never disclosed to the newspaper. Production costs were never mentioned as well during the interview. What was noted in the interview was that MMOs can be quite expensive to build, sometimes costing tens of millions of dollars to put ...

Where WILL all the Money Come From?
The Grouchy Gamer — ... Curt Schilling, 38 Studios Recently, Werit wondered if the MMO thing isn’t getting out of hand and whether a lot of the now MMO’s on the horizon are destined to fail because there isn’t market share for all of them.  You have to wonder if ...

Brett Close out, Jennifer MacLean in as 38 CEO
The Grouchy Gamer — In a move that I didn’t see coming, Brett Close has left 38 Studios “to pursue other interests.”  This is a big change because it’s been said in the past about Close that he’s loyal and sticks to a position.  As a matter of fact it’s been discussed in the past that they were very pleased to be able to wrest him away from his last position.  Now we don’t know if this is a personal change for Brett, or if this is business driven.  We probably won’t know for a long time, if ever.  Brett isn’t from the Boston area ...
